The original family owned the car up until four years ago when it was sold off the estate. It was garage kept and “Ziebarted” (rust proofing) when it was new. The Mercury also sat in the garage for over 12 years before the current owner bought the car and spent the time and money to make it road worthy again.
This Cougar starts easily, has a quiet ride draws attention wherever it goes. Selling for personal reasons.
Engine & transmission:
The 351 cu. in. Cleveland engine has had the carburetor rebuilt, fuel lines flushed, new filters, belts, hoses, Pertronics ignition added, custom aluminum radiator (factory unit included with sale), and recent tune-up. There is a slight valve ‘tick’ which does not affect the performance of the car.
The stock C6 automatic transmission was inspected and the fluid changed. It appears to shift normally.
Body & Paint:
The exterior paint is original. It does show some age, but for a 52-year-old paint job it looks good. As mentioned, the car was treated to being ‘Ziebarted’ when new and that does seem to have preserved the exterior. There is an area on the lower right front fender where there had been some damage, and it was ‘hammered’ out. No bodywork was performed (see photo). Also, there is some rust along the rear edge of the trunk floor. The exterior chrome shows some age but can be re-plated. The top was believed to have been replaced because it is in excellent condition and operates smoothly. Windows crank up and down easily and all the exterior lights, including the sequential rear turn signals, function.
Interior:
The Cougar’s interior is all original and in very good condition. The dash pad has a slight crack on the passenger side, but overall, it’s great. Factory A/C does not work, neither does the clock. All the other factory instrumentation including the AM/FM radio work.
Chassis:
Most of the suspension has been gone over and had new bushings, shocks, tie rode ends, tires, and springs replaced. The car rides and handles well with the power steering and power brakes (disc front and drums rear). The American Racing wheels were added by the original owner and the original wheels and caps are not included.
The overall condition of this Cougar, for being mostly original, is good. You can drive it just about anywhere.
Additional parts are included such as a new Edelbrock aluminum 4-barrel intake manifold and the original distributor.
