DESCRIPTION:
Up for sale by a private party is this low mileage (37,500) and very original 1969 Mercedes-Benz “Pagoda” 280SL powered by its legendary 2.8L fuel-injected 6-cylinder, rated at 180 hp, and backed by a 4-speed manual transmission. This is basically a one-owner car who purchased it from the original buyer in 1970!! Yes, the same owner for 55 years. Always garaged and maintained. The reason for the low mileage is that it was only used to attend cocktail parties in the neighborhood.

As far as the body and paint being original, the owner believes it’s about 75% the original Dark Olive Green (291), The trunk lid was repainted due to someone sitting on it a number of years ago. When it was redone, the owner decided not to put the “280SL” emblem back on. There are no replacement panels or ‘bondo’ in the car. All are believed to be original. All the chrome and glass are also original.
In the trunk is an original full-size spare tire and cover with the jack and tools.
The 2.8L engine starts easily, idles smoothly, and is very responsive. It does appear to have had a head gasket replaced at some point. The same MB shop has been servicing the car for over 30 years. Some records are included.
The 4-speed transmission shifts easily through the gears and even the backup lights work.
The interior is original and does show some ‘patina’ including the walnut veneer dashboard area, but all the instruments including the clock, AM/FM radio, and courtesy lights. The leather seats are in excellent condition and as far as the owner knows they were never redone. No evidence of rips or broken seams.
The hardtop is in excellent condition including the headliner. The soft top was replaced several years ago and is also in very good condition.
The overall condition of the ‘Pagoda’ is very good. It starts easily, runs well and only needs to be driven. It is an excellent example of a Classic Mercedes-Benz.
