The known history of the car only goes back a few decades when the prior owner purchased the Z/28 from a person who had removed the original 302 motor and replaced it with a 327 V-8. The original 302 was included with the sale and was then rebuilt and reinstalled in the car. Since that time (approximately 3 years ago) the ‘Z’ has been driven only about 400 miles.
This Z/28 has been refurbished carefully and many of the mechanical parts as well as the original pieces have either been replaced or reconditioned to maintain as much of its originality as possible.
In each section below I have tried to list what has been replaced or refurbished. The numbers for authentication are listed at the end.
This Z/28 is a fantastic and reliable driver, as well as an example of a surviving Muscle Car which has not been molested and still performs and shows well.
BODY & PAINT: All the body panels and floors appear to be original with no bodywork evident. About 80% of the ‘DD’ Grotto blue paint appears to be the factory lacquer color. The trunk and panel above the trunk appear to have been repainted and the trunk stripes are tape, not paint. There are some age cracks and small bubbles in areas such as the lower front corners of each door, but overall, the car is solid (see photos). The stripes on the front hood, cowl, and hood panel are painted and appear to be original.
All the exterior chrome looks original and in good condition (some pitting). The rear “bumperettes” are new. The glass is also in good condition but the originality was not verified.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION: The 302 V-8 was rebuilt using 11:1 pistons and a solid lifter cam as per the factory specifications. The carburetor is an 800 dual-feed Holley, but not original. Ignition is original including the dual-points type distributor. Alternator is new but does not have a deep groove pulley. New original style valve covers, retainers, heater hoses, plug wires, separators, side-pole battery (and topper), fuel lines, exhaust system, and PCV valve w/ hose were added.
The stock M-21 transmission is stamped correctly (see below). Clutch pack assembly was serviced by the prior owner.
INTERIOR: The interior appears to be the original black vinyl and in very good condition. No visible broken seams or tears. The dashboard and pad show no cracks or aging. All the gauges in the dash and console as well as the 8 track player function. Only the clock on the tic-tock tach does not work. All the seatbelts are date coded ‘1968’. The headliner does have a hole above the driver’s visor, but a new one is included along with new front seat covers. The shifter is a Hurst (not Muncie) unit with a new boot, console cover, and shifter track. Also a new Rosewood steering wheel and sill strips were added.
CHASSIS: Stock front end and rear differential with a new brake system including master cylinder, wheel cylinders, pads, calipers, and shoes. New parking brake assembly was installed. Original 15” Rally Wheels were media blasted, painted, and have new trim rings. New F70/15 Goodyear raised-letter radial tires.
