Here we have a unique car that was slightly ahead of its time. This is a 1966 Rambler American 440 but modified to a HIGHER level than a real SC Scrambler Rambler from 1969 which was built by Hurst.

This car was built by Ken Keir of Keir Race Cars in Leonardtown, MD. It was his personal car but then sold to the current owner two years ago. He is selling it to ‘thin out the garage’ and has only driven it approximately 300 miles!! Total mileage since the car was completed 5 years ago is less than 1000.

Please note as you look at the photos, the ‘custom’ made one-off pieces the builder added. Such as the coil bracket welded to the breather, or the dipstick holder, custom deep oil pan with a perimeter reinforcement to protect it from scraping. A lot of detail and thought went into this ‘Scrambler’.

The Rambler started out as a Florida six-cylinder rust-free donor. It was disassembled and painted in a 2-stage urethane 2008 Nissan ‘Flash Green’ metallic. It looks as good as it did the day it was done. There are no replacement panels or ‘bondo’ anywhere in the car. As you can see from the video and photos, it is very straight.

The seats were reupholstered to match the ‘60’s period and the door panels as well as the headliner are original. All factory gauges work accept the original radio. The AM/FM/CD player was added instead.

Power comes from a professionally rebuilt 304 cu. in. AMC has a slight overbore and has been internally balanced. It runs on pump gas and has 10:1 compression. Topping it off is a set of Edelbrock aluminum heads and one of their intake manifolds. The cam is a Comp Cams hydraulic ‘Thumper’ item and not a roller. A blueprinted Holley 650 double pumper and Moroso air cleaner add to the finishing touches. The ignition is handled by MSD with a 6AL mounted in the trunk and a billet distributor. Long tube headers connect to a 2.5” complete exhaust system w/Flowmaster mufflers. The cooling is handled by an oversized radiator and custom shroud. Stays between 175 and 185 degrees in the hot summer.

The transmission is a 727 Torque Flight which has been blueprinted and runs a “Boss Hog” converter with about a 3500-stall speed. The shifter is a Precision item. NO MANUAL VALVE BODY. Shifts like a typical automatic.

Of course, all new brakes and hardware were added (drum front and rear). Power steering, new suspension components, welded in ‘square tubing’ frame connectors and Lakewood traction bars. The rear differential came from an AMX and houses a 3.54:1 posi unit.

The 15” wheels were custom made by Wheel Vintique, ($1,000+) having a special offset and then powder coated.

Original builder did run the car down the ¼ mile a couple of times with spinning tires and only a best ET of 13.40. Otherwise, the car is driven to shows and cruises.

Around 2011 I started an online service assisting owners of Classic, Vintage, and Muscle cars to sell their vehicles without them leaving the garage.
