Sold & transported from Darlington, MD to Denver, CO. Beautifully restored 1956 Mercury Montclair 2-door hardtop powered by its original 312 c.i. “Y” block and backed by its matching Merc-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission.
- This “Big M” had a total frame-off restoration performed over 12 years ago when it was painted using a 2-stage urethane in the original Mercury Classic White and Verona Green.
- The term Mercury used in 1956 was “Flo-Tone” because of the section painted just outside of the driver and passenger side windows flowed down from the top. Total mileage since the restoration is shown on the odometer at 2713.
- Unique to this Montclair is its M235 power plant. Mercury’s standard engine was a 312 c.i. ‘Y’ block 2-barrel rated at 210 h.p. with an optional 225 h.p. 4-barrel available. But later in 1956 Mercury offered a “Hi Po” version called the ‘M235’ (meaning 235 h.p.). The difference was a slightly hotter camshaft and either a Carter or Holley 4-barrel carburetor (this one has a Holley). Additionally, the valve covers were painted silver. This is one of approximately 2500 units Mercury produced.
- The interior was redone in the factory vinyl pattern and is in very good condition. The factory gauges function normally as well as the heat and defrost. An aftermarket JVC AM/FM/CD player was added including a rear speaker. The radio, clock, and wipers do not work.
- The chassis was totally refurbished using OEM or Mercury reproduction parts including the bushings and springs. Please note this Mercury came from the factory without power steering or power brakes. It rides on Coker 215/75R/15 radial white wall tires.
- The exterior chrome and stainless are in good to excellent condition. There appears to be no chips or cracks in the glass and the windows go up and down easily.
- A custom aftermarket radiator was added for more efficient cooling and the original one is included with the Mercury.
- Recent maintenance includes a new master cylinder and brake light switch.
- The “Big M” drives smoothly, handles well, and draws attention wherever it goes.
